Reasons for a Bad Cooling System in Your BMW

BMW Engine Overheating

BMWs are great cars to own, and every single part is important to maintain. Keeping the vehicle running properly and putting the time into having your regular maintenance performed is key to its overall efficiency.

If your cooling system fails and your engine overheats you can be looking at a hefty service bill. If you suspect that you may have a problem, you should have it checked out immediately. Putting it off can lead to major problems.

The Cooling System

The function of the cooling system is to remove excess heat and regulate the engine’s temperature. It is composed of 6 main parts which include the engine, radiator, water pump, cooling fan, hoses and the thermostat.

Signs of a Bad Cooling System

Overheating Engine

There are many issues that can cause your engine to overheat. If your engine is overheating, do not ignore it and see a professional mechanic immediately. If the radiator pump fails, this can cause your car to overheat resulting in damage to your engine. Always pay attention to your engine’s temperature gauge.

Coolant Leak

If you notice that your vehicle is leaking a blue liquid near the front of your vehicle, there is a good chance that it is coolant. Have our certified mechanics inspect the issue and determine the cause of the leak. Coolant will need to be added to the reservoir. If you do this yourself it is important that you never mix red or green coolants with the blue because they are not interchangeable.

Steam Coming Out of the Radiator

If your water pump fails or a hose becomes disconnected your engine will likely overheat and produce steam. The main purpose of the water pump is to circulate water to the radiator. If it cannot move the coolant this leaves your engine vulnerable to overheating.

High Pitched Whining Sound

If you have a high-pitched whining sound coming from your engine you could possibly have a loose belt or worn out bearings in your water pump. If these bearings wear completely out your water pump will fail and you need to replace it.

Make Sure Your Thermostat is Working Properly

If your thermostat isn’t working properly, you should have it replaced immediately. The thermostat is a crucial component that helps regulate the temperature of the coolant that flows through the engine.

Routine Maintenance

Routine maintenance is a crucial part of keeping any type of vehicle running smoothly. Keeping up on inspections allows your mechanic to find issues before they become major problems. If you do not stay on top of your maintenance and inspections, you may run into issues that are extremely expensive to fix. Taking care of these problems early allows you to save time and money, and you will be able to enjoy your BMW for many more years to come.

If you allow overheating issues to go unchecked and unfixed, you are looking at a damaged engine. An overheating engine can result in damaged head gaskets and cylinder heads. The cost to fix just one of these issues can be in the thousands. So, if you notice any coolant related issues we suggest that you do not wait to have them checked out. The longer you wait, the more your expense it is going to be.
